I'm assuming that Jazz is disqualified so...in no order...

"Three Days" by Jane's Addiction
"Off the Wall" by Michael Jackson
"When You Were Mine" by Prince
"Can't Stand Losing You" by the Police
"Superstition" by Stevie Wonder

This is tough. 5 is just not enough.

*EDIT*
I think I might be confused. I put my personal top 5, but I think what you want is what I think are the 5 greatest songs ever written. While I stand behind my 5, I think the following more accurately falls in line with what this tourney is trying to determine:

Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones
While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles
Superstition by Stevie Wonder
Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell
(that could easily be I Want You Back by the Jackson 5)
And finally, the toughest one to pick...
So Lonely by the Police

I was going to go with Welcome to the Jungle or Smells Like Teen Spirit, but they'd be 6 & 7

This is my official list, for your consideration

Not disqualified, just guaranteed to be eliminated from contention almost instantly, thus a waste of a pick.

"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" - Jimi Hendrix
"Cissy Strut" - The Meters
"My Philosophy" - Boogie Down Productions
"Waiting Room" - Fugazi
"A Day In The Life" - The Beatles

(edited my list twice so far)

what happens if there's no repetition? In other words, I have Off The Wall, veal has Billie Jean, and let's say someone else picks Thriller. What happens then? A mini-tourney until you get to the definitive song by that artist? Is it BIS' choice?

No it should be SONGS regardless if the artist appears more than once. An artist appearing more than once should only signify their songwriting talent, they should not be penalized for it.

You're absolutely right. I'm just thinking aloud about whatever rules are in this game. But here's a vote for what you said.

That's what we said on the show. This is a competition of songs, not artists. There can be 40 entries from one artist if that's what the nominators call for. Should the number of nominations exceed 64, your boys at BIS will have to be trusted with the task of whittling the list down to fit the tournament bracket. We won't be more aggressive towards artists that have multiple entries. While checking & balancing amongst ourselves, we'll eliminate what we believe are the weaker entries regardless of who performs it.

I'm trying to remember what I said on the show so I don't contradict myself. I think I said I wanted to have the submissions in no later than the 15th so we could have the site updated over that weekend & be ready to launch with the competition by the show on the 19th (But my memory could be totally off).
